The Year 13 students had a great time this year on their PE camp.Here is a video showing some of what they got up to.

Cross Country 2011

Friday was the last day of term 1 and it was a great day in the PE department. They held their cross country event, and this year it was a much bigger event as it included the senior students this time.
It was a beautiful afternoon at the Point England reserve, when the whole school walked there to have their cross country day. The students sat in the respective house groups and the prefects and house captains made sure the atmosphere was getting very competitive!!!
The students ran in various races around the reserve, and the finish line was the place to be as they were coming through fast, however tired they were.
Tamaki College staff also joined in, and competed in the races with the students across the afternoon.

Congratulations to the following students who won their races in the inaugural Tamaki College cross country day

Y9 Girls Courtney Henry
Y9 Boys – Shade Dernondy

Y10 Girls – Asinate Fusitu’a
Y10 Boys – Richard Timoti

The day however was about participating and contributing and each student had an important role to play in winning the class competition. Each students place was recorded and the classes’ average place was used to decide the winning class. On the day 10RCb worked together well and narrowly bet 9TLe. As a reward 10RCb went on a class trip to the Waiwera hot pools and had a great day.

The course itself was based at Pt England reserve and was 3 kilometres through the tracks within the reserve. Everyone who participated needs to be congratulated on an excellent effort.

P.E. teaches the Haka for Maori Language Week...

The PE Department here at Tamaki College has really got into the feeling of Maori Language Week. They got the Maori Department on board to help teach the Haka.

High Ropes Course 2009

Safety, trust, responsibility, co-operation are the values required to participate in a High Ropes Course. Year 12 Physical Education student’s demonstrated these values in March this year when they went to Uni-tech to participate in a course run by Adventure Works.

Students were placed in situations where they were 15 metres above the ground, on a beam performing various activities. What made them safe were their pairs belaying them from the ground with ropes. Students were responsible for their own safety. This included checking knots, harnesses and other equipment and having the maturity recognise risk and develop strategies to overcome these.

The course was thoroughly enjoyed by all participants. The reward was in the leadership shown by the students and the changes of behaviour that occurred through goal setting and reflection. The challenge now is for the students to transfer there behaviours into school life and their family lives.

On top of these outcomes students also gained eight level 2 credits towards the NCEA. Allen Mulia, Sabina Stowers, and Teiro Glassie deserve particular praise for the leadership qualities they exhibited on the course.
